Porto Itapoá joins the Sustainability Pact of the Ministry of Ports and Airportss
Porto Itapoá reaffirmed this Tuesday (28) its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the port sector. During an event held at B3 in São Paulo, the terminal’s CEO, Ricardo Arten, signed the Pact for Sustainability, a pioneering initiative by the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor), led by Minister Sílvio Costa Filho. Porto Itapoá is one of the leading references in sustainability among private ports in the country.
The Pact is part of the launch of the new Sustainability Policy for the ports, airports, and waterways sectors. The initiative establishes strict criteria for granting recognition seals – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond – to companies that adopt practices based on ESG (environmental, social, and governance) pillars. Among the requirements are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the development of social and environmental actions, and alignment with the global goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Commitment to Sustainability
Porto Itapoá is already widely recognized as a reference in sustainability in the Brazilian port sector. During the event, Ricardo Arten highlighted the importance of joining the pact. “Sustainability in the port sector is not just a goal but a daily commitment. At Porto Itapoá, this translates into concrete actions, recognitions, and results that make a difference,” he emphasized.
Porto Itapoá achieved a score of 98.33 on the Environmental Development Index (IDA) of Antaq, a performance that earned the Terminal the Via Viva Award as the most sustainable private port in the country. “These recognitions, such as the Gold Seal from the GHG Protocol, are reflections of management committed to transparency, accuracy, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. We are also proud of the international I-REC certification, which confirms that 100% of the electricity used in 2023 came from renewable sources,” he stated.
Technology and Innovation in Service of Sustainability
The pursuit of energy efficiency and technological innovation is a strategic differentiator at Porto Itapoá. Currently, the terminal has the largest fleet of electric trucks among Brazilian ports, consisting of 20 vehicles that reduce 2,000 tons of carbon annually and save 858,000 liters of fuel.
Another milestone of innovation is the remote operation of RTGs, hybrid equipment that consumes three times less fuel. Porto Itapoá was the first terminal in South America to implement this technology, acquiring ten of these equipment as part of its transition to a cleaner and more efficient operation.
Ricardo Arten also highlighted the terminal’s adherence to the Net Zero Ambition Movement, reinforcing Porto Itapoá’s commitment to decarbonization and responsible resource management.
Global Competitiveness and the 2030 Agenda
The event at B3 marked an important step in consolidating the Pact for Sustainability and strengthening Brazil’s position on the international stage. The guidelines presented by MPor align the port sector with the global goals of the 2030 Agenda, promoting greater competitiveness and attracting foreign investments.
