Porto Itapoá: expansion and consolidation mark a year of outstanding results in 2024
In a report published by ATP, Porto Itapoá was highlighted for its outstanding performance in Antaq’s environmental ranking
The remarkable score of 98.33 demonstrates the northern Santa Catarina terminal’s ongoing commitment to improving environmental practices.
The technical report from the Research and Development Coordination of the Association of Private Port Terminals (ATP), released this week, highlighted Porto Itapoá’s exceptional performance in sustainable operations. The ATP document is based on the 2023 Environmental Development Index (IDA), conducted by the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq), whose results reaffirm the environmental commitment of Private Use Terminals (TUPs) in Brazil.
With sustainability as one of Porto Itapoá’s three main pillars, the remarkable score of 98.33 in Antaq’s IDA demonstrates the terminal’s continuous efforts to improve environmental practices. “Our socio-environmental initiatives have been part of the terminal’s strategy since the beginning of our operations, and the results presented in the ATP report align with what we believe to be the development model for the country’s port sector,” says Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., Porto Itapoá’s Director of Operations, Technology, and Environment.
Also based on Antaq’s IDA, Porto Itapoá had previously been recognized with the Via Viva Award by the Ministry of Infrastructure as the most sustainable private port in the country. A benchmark in the sector, the IDA is composed of 38 indicators related to current legal compliance and best practices in environmental management, health, and operational safety.
With an average score of 84.5 points, container TUPs recorded a 1.1% increase compared to the previous year, reaffirming their environmental efficiency. According to the report, the average IDA score for all TUPs was 57.04 points, while the terminals associated with the Association of Private Port Terminals (ATP) achieved an average of 68.7 points, which is 20.4% higher than the overall average. “The 2023 IDA results highlight the importance of the environmental agenda for private terminals. The performance of container and mining-focused TUPs serves as an example that it is possible to combine operational efficiency with sustainability, pointing to a promising future,” says Gabriela Costa, ATP’s Executive Director.
Established by Antaq Resolution No. 2,650/2012, the IDA is a monitoring and control tool for environmental management in port facilities. According to the regulatory agency, the index allows for the quantification and simplification of information, making it easier for the public and decision-makers to understand port environmental issues.
