Porto Itapoá breaks handling record in April
In April 2024, Porto Itapoá achieved several operational records. The total throughput reached 107,475 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), surpassing the terminal’s previous record of 106,565 TEUs set in October 2023.
According to Felipe Fioravanti Kaufmann, Director of Business Development and Customer Experience at Porto Itapoá, these figures confirm the growing importance of the terminal as a logistics option for the market. “We have been the fastest-growing private terminal in the country for two consecutive years and now hold a market share of about 8.5%,” he noted.
“In 2023, we hit several significant milestones, including surpassing the mark of 1 million TEUs handled in a single year. However, it is important to remember that it was a very challenging year for the entire segment. Porto Itapoá solidified its position as a regional port reference, having prepared for this through heavy infrastructure investments,” Kaufmann emphasized.
April also saw significant numbers in the import of general cargo, which stood at 35,692 TEUs, second only to January this year, which saw 36,951 TEUs handled. The export of general cargo was 17,317 TEUs, only behind December last year, when the terminal moved over 18,891 TEUs.
Frozen and Refrigerated Cargo
Porto Itapoá also set a record for the export of frozen and refrigerated cargo, reaching 12,460 TEUs, surpassing the 10,839 TEUs from December 2023. This figure is an important indicator for the regional economy and reinforces the excellent operational conditions offered by the terminal to this crucial supply chain, according to Kaufmann.
“Santa Catarina and Paraná are major exporters of refrigerated and frozen cargo, especially animal protein,” explained the director.
