Porto Itapoá achieves another historic record in movement, reaching 1 million TEUs in 10 months
October 2024 also marked the best month in the history of the Terminal, which moved 122,724 TEUs, surpassing the record of June 2024, when 105,416 TEUs were moved.
Porto Itapoá, located in Baía da Babitonga, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina, is celebrating another record in its movement this week. The port terminal reached the mark of 1 million TEUs (unit equivalent to a 20-foot container) moved in just 10 months. This new record is notable not only for the quantity, but also for the time in which it was achieved. The previous mark had been achieved after 12 months of operation, which means that the port surpassed its own performance in 67 days, a result that reflects the efficiency of operations. October 2024 also marked the best month in the Terminal’s history, with 122,724 TEUs handled, surpassing the record set in June 2024, when 105,416 TEUs were handled. Another major milestone in October was the number of ships docked: 60, the highest number in the Terminal’s history, surpassing September, when 55 ships docked.
The month also saw a historic record for DRY Imports, with 53,909 TEUs handled; a historic record for transshipments, with 18,414 TEUs; a historic record for gate transactions, with 94,032 TEUs; and a record for Crossdocking, Import and Export, 2,223 TEUs.
The Director of Operations, Technology and Environment at Porto Itapoá, Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., attributes this achievement to the Terminal’s modern and efficient infrastructure. “This result is the result of the constant investments we have made to continually improve our operations. Furthermore, we are the terminal with the largest number of cranes in Santa Catarina, with seven robust and technologically advanced pieces of equipment, and the largest storage yard”, he emphasizes.
The record is also attributed to the completion of Phase III of expansion, in the first half of 2024, which allowed Porto Itapoá to expand the yard with a capacity of 455 thousand m², being the largest in Santa Catarina and one of the largest in Brazil. This infrastructure allows us to store 31 thousand TEUs and handle 1.8 million TEUs per year.
And Phase IV is already underway to meet the growing demand, both nationally and internationally. The expansion will include an additional 120 thousand m² to the yard and new acquisitions of high-tech equipment, which promise to further increase the efficiency and sustainability of the terminal. “This expansion reinforces our commitment to efficiency and logistics capacity, consolidating Porto Itapoá as a true giant in the port sector”, highlights Porto Itapoá CEO, Ricardo Arten.
According to the Director of Business Development and Customer Experience, Felipe Fioravanti Kaufmann, the market is in dire need of port logistics capacity and Porto Itapoá is taking an important step towards greater fluidity and efficiency in foreign trade. “This record is a joint achievement by Porto Itapoá and its customers, who together have been building a history of partnership and mutual trust.”
In August of this year, Porto Itapoá received the Portos + Brasil Award, granted by the Ministry of Ports and Airports of the Federal Government. The terminal ranked 2nd in the category of growth in container movement, being the private terminal with the highest growth in this category in the country for two consecutive years.
