Porto Itapoá publishes its 2023 Sustainability Report

Porto Itapoá has published its 2023 Sustainability Report, detailing advancements and commitments in social, environmental, and governance aspects, and how the company has managed its processes in these areas. Cássio Schreiner, President of the Terminal, emphasizes that this is the third edition of the report. “We strive to present high-quality material that clearly reflects all achievements and challenges of the past year,” he says.

The report adheres to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, an international organization providing independent standards to help businesses, governments, and other organizations understand and communicate their impacts on socio-environmental issues. According to Schreiner, these principles guided the structure of the report. “The publication is an important element for the company’s relationship with the community and the market in general,” he adds.

The report was organized by consultant Simone Faustini from Nexus Sustainability Consulting, with experience working with major companies and institutions such as FIESC (Federation of Industries of Santa Catarina), Nidec Global Appliance, All4labels, Andritz, Unimed Curitiba, and Grupo Lunelli, among others.

Porto Itapoá’s efforts in developing its processes focused on three main areas: Social, Environmental, and Governance. Socially, the company promotes various social transformation programs for both external stakeholders and its employees. Similarly, the environmental area is covered by several environmental programs focusing on conservation, awareness, and sustainable development. In terms of governance, Porto maintains its ombudsman and various communication channels for independent reporting, upholding the highest standards.

Environmental Highlights:

A significant initiative launched in 2023 is the Carbon Neutrality Project, in partnership with Grupo Ambipar, aimed at offsetting clients’ carbon emissions. This makes Porto Itapoá the first Brazilian port to enable the inclusion of carbon credits in its operations. The project begins in 2024, allowing Terminal clients to purchase carbon credits to offset their operational emissions. By pioneering the carbon credit market, Porto Itapoá offers a new possibility that is expected to impact the entire logistics chain.

Another environmental highlight in 2023 was Porto Itapoá’s shift to sourcing all its energy from renewable sources within the national system. This achievement was certified by I-REC(e), a global system for tracking renewable energy attributes designed to facilitate reliable accounting of renewable energy attributed to consumers. The Terminal also holds the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) Gold Seal, an international program for greenhouse gas emissions control.

Social Highlights:

Socially, Porto Itapoá invested over R$ 5 million in projects through Fiscal Incentive Laws, sponsoring more than 40 entities and projects. These projects focus on culture, sports, attention and assistance to children and adolescents, the elderly, oncological care, and assistance to people with disabilities (PWDs), bringing significant benefits to the city of Itapoá. The direction prioritizes projects with an impact on the local community. Institutions from other regions were also supported, ensuring they provide appropriate benefits to the municipality of Itapoá.

In conclusion, 2023 was a year to consolidate Porto Itapoá’s position as one of Brazil’s leading ports. “We proudly represent beautiful Itapoá, a municipality where we actively participate in its development. Similarly, we carry the name of Baía da Babitonga, one of Brazil’s most important port complexes. The bay, which bathes Itapoá but also São Francisco do Sul, Joinville, Garuva, Araquari, and Barra do Sul, is now a major economic asset for the state, with all the natural and economic characteristics of the world’s great ports. With the right investments, we will achieve many milestones dreamed of since the beginning of our operations,” states President Cássio Schreiner in the message presenting the Sustainability Report.
