Porto Itapoá Reuses Over 1 Million Liters of Water in 2024
Porto Itapoá achieved a remarkable milestone by reusing 1 million liters of water in its warehouse, inaugurated in January 2024. This accomplishment was made possible thanks to the Water Reuse Station at the Terminal’s new warehouse, part of the Phase III expansion of the port.
The Water Reuse Station at the warehouse utilizes advanced internal membrane technology, compact and efficient, capable of treating up to 10 m³ of water per day. The treated water is reused in various operational activities at the port, such as supplying toilets, cleaning vehicles, managing waste centers, and other facility needs. This process not only reduces the consumption of potable water but also minimizes the environmental impact of logistical activities.
“This is an example of how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand. Our commitment goes beyond operational efficiency; we are dedicated to adopting practices that contribute to environmental preservation and the rational use of natural resources,” emphasized Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., Director of Operations, Technology, and Environment at Porto Itapoá.
The initiative aligns with the best environmental practices and represents a significant advancement in water resource management at port facilities. Additionally, it reinforces Porto Itapoá’s position as a model of innovation and socio-environmental responsibility in the sector.
The success of the Water Reuse Station in just one year of operation is a promising indicator of the impact sustainable measures can have on the logistics and port industry. With the advancement of this technology, it is expected that other organizations will follow suit, promoting greater adoption of environmentally responsible practices across the country.
Porto Itapoá Treats Over 7 Million Liters of Effluent Annually
With an advanced effluent treatment system using bioreactive membranes, Porto Itapoá treats more than 7 million liters of water per year. The Terminal’s Effluent Treatment Station has existed since the beginning of operations and has been continuously improved to achieve maximum environmental efficiency, in addition to meeting environmental requirements. In 2022, it gained a new configuration, only seen in more advanced sectors of the industry, enabling maximum environmental conservation and sustainability with high-quality water reuse.
The average daily treatment is 20,000 liters from the toilets, cafeteria, and kitchen of the company’s administrative building, but the system has the capacity for over 70,000 liters. The treated water reaches an ideal level of purity for reuse, and the port is already studying the possibility of reusing it for its operations, such as cleaning its facilities and equipment.
2030 Agenda
Porto Itapoá is committed to the UN’s 2030 Agenda, which establishes the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) to be achieved by 2030. Although the Agenda is focused on country-level actions, many objectives are also replicable for private entities like Porto Itapoá. Within the scope of water and effluents, SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) are considered relevant.
