The Port treats twenty thousand liters of water a day, discharged from the bathrooms, restaurant and the company’s administrative building.
Porto Itapoá’s wastewater treatment reaches 7 million liters
Porto Itapoá uses advanced Membrane Bioreactors to treat 7.3 million liters of effluent each year. The Terminal’s Effluent Treatment Plant has been in place since it began operating. It has been upgraded since to make it as environmentally efficient as possible and to comply with environmental regulations. A new system was installed in 2022; one that is usually only seen in the most advanced sections of the industry. This ensures that the environment is protected as much as possible and it is sustainable, producing quality reused water.
Twenty thousand liters of water are treated every day; discharged from the bathrooms, the restaurant and the company’s administrative building. The system, however, has the capacity to treat a further 70 thousand liters. The responsible use of water is a fundamental part of management for Cássio Schreiner, the President of Porto Itapoá. “Water is ‘our home’ and we appreciate that we need to sustain it, for the sake of the life that revolves around it; its social, environmental and economic aspects”, he reflected.
The water treated is pure enough to be reused and the Port is already looking into the possibility of reusing it in its operations, such as for cleaning the facilities and equipment. “We have tried to constantly improve in this area. We have always been looking for new goals and results”, said Schreiner. The Terminal is currently trialing the reuse of treated water, as well as rainwater, which is collected and used on the quays.

Environmental water management encompasses all liquids that flow around the Port: drinking water, sewage, industrial effluent, rainwater and it also looks to use alternative sources, including treatment and reuse. These initiatives to improve sustainability measures and tackle climate change are in line with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
World Water Day
World Water Day is celebrated on March 22. This day was established by the UN (United Nations) in 1992, to alert people to the importance of preserving water. For Porto Itapoá, the date helps to reinforce its commitment to water resources. This is the focus of ten environmental programs within the Terminal, as well as a specific action plan, called the Water Management Plan (WMP).
Environmental issues are so important to the company’s management that a specific department was created in 2022. Porto Itapoá’s Environment Manager, Christiano Berthier de Anhaia, explained that the WMP is a great example of the company’s actions in this area. “Our goal is to reach a high degree of excellence, with zero water wasted and full reuse of this resource”.
To achieve this, Porto is already planning new initiatives, based on some of the most advanced ideas on the subject. “We have looked at good national and international practice on the corporate use of water resources and, there will soon be a number of innovations in this area”, revealed Anhaia.
