Porto Itapoá breaks the handling monthly record for the third time in 2023
Porto Itapoá started the second half of 2023 breaking its monthly handling record, with 99,396 TEUs (20-foot containers). The value is about 10% higher than the 89,880 TEUs handled by the Terminal in July 2022. The same record has already been broken twice this year, in March and May, marking a very positive semester, with 18% growth compared to the same period last year.
Most of the movements in July were imports, around 15% of the total, according to the president of Porto Itapoá, Cássio Schreiner. “The results for the first half of 2023 pointed to a 40% growth in imports at Porto Itapoá compared to the same period of 2022”, Schreiner says. “It shows a market heated, especially by the industry.”
China continues to be the country of origin of most imports that came through Porto Itapoá, with Germany and the US second and third, respectively. The production chains that most moved imports at the terminal were general machinery and its components, plastic, and also fabrics, clothing, and footwear.
Exports, in turn, corresponded to just over 13% of the total in July, with the US being the main destination, followed by China and Saudi Arabia. The production chains that most moved exports at the Terminal were frozen and refrigerated meat, wood and its products, and chemical products (organic and inorganic).
Transshipment operations were also crucial, accounting for around 13% of the total handled. “Transshipment is the operation in which the containers are unloaded from the ship to later be loaded onto another ship with a different destination,” Schreiner explains.
Other Records
Porto Itapoá broke its historical record for LCL cargo – cargo that occupies less than one container and, therefore, shares space. There were a total of 40 containers, referring to 227 different orders. July was also the month in which the Terminal received the most ships: a total of 54 ships.
