Porto Itapoá: Intermodal South America 2024 was a great event
The Porto Itapoá Water Management Plan aims to guide decisions related to water and effluent planning and management at the Terminal.
World Water Day: Porto Itapoá reused over 100,000 liters of water in 4 months
On March 22, 1992, the United Nations (UN) created World Water Day. The date is an effort by the international community to address essential issues involving water resources. Porto Itapoá is attentive to the importance of this theme and, for this reason, has developed its Water Management Plan (PGH).
The PGH aims to guide decisions related to water and effluent planning and management at the Terminal. The Director of Operations, Technology, and Environment, Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., explains the objective: “We want to promote water security, efficiency in water use, and compliance with environmental regulations.”
Effluent reuse projects and rainwater reuse projects contribute to the preservation of water resources. Through water meters, the Terminal has already measured the reuse of 100,000 liters in four months of operation of the new facilities, specifically the new warehouse. Currently, the new warehouse has a hydraulic network for reusing water to supply toilets and urinals. However, the amount of treated water at the warehouse’s Effluent Treatment Plant (ETE) is significant. “For this reason, there is a dedicated truck that assists in functions such as cleaning, unclogging, supplying reuse water reservoirs, and managing effluents at the Terminal,” says Rosa Jr.
In the advanced stage of the projects, the Terminal is implementing the reuse of treated water from the skid Effluent Treatment Plant (ETE) for washing parts, equipment, and the floor of the maintenance area. This initiative aims to evaluate performance and acceptance and, if successful, will be extended to yard facilities and other locations requiring periodic cleaning.
With an advanced effluent treatment system using bio-reactive membranes, the Porto Itapoá Terminal Effluent Treatment Plant treats 7.3 million liters of water per year. The Terminal’s Effluent Treatment Plant has existed since the beginning of operations and has been continuously improved to achieve maximum environmental efficiency, in addition to complying with environmental requirements. In 2022, it received a new configuration seen only in more advanced industry sectors, enabling maximum environmental conservation and sustainability with water reuse quality.
The treated water reaches an ideal purity level for reuse, and the Porto is already studying the possibility of reusing it for its operations, such as cleaning its dependencies and equipment. “We have been constantly evolving in this area, always setting new goals and achieving results,” says Rosa Jr.
